What you need to check

You can put extra money into your super (your retirement savings fund), then ask the tax office to release it to help buy your first home. Up to $15,000 a year, and $50,000 in total, of these extra payments count. You get back all of the payments you made from after-tax money and 85% of payments made before tax, plus some earnings. You must be 18 or older when you ask for the release, and your name must be on the title of the home. You must never have owned property in Australia, unless the tax office agrees you had money hardship. You cannot use the scheme if you have already had a release under it. Couples and friends can each use their own savings for the same home.

This is a short summary. Other rules may apply, like income or where you live. Check the full rules with the agency that runs it.
