What you need to check

You must care for a newborn or newly adopted child and meet a work test, an income test and residence rules. Employees, casuals, contractors and self-employed people can all get it. Families get up to 26 weeks for children born or adopted from 1 July 2026. Couples share the weeks, with some days kept for each parent. Super (retirement savings) is also paid on it for children born from July 2025. You can claim up to 3 months before the due date. The daily rate changes each 1 July and depends on when you take your days.

This is a short summary. Other rules may apply, like income or where you live. Check the full rules with the agency that runs it.
