## What you need to check

Stamp duty (transfer duty) is a tax you pay when you buy property. First home buyers pay none on a new or existing home worth up to $800,000. They pay less on homes from $800,000 to under $1 million. For empty land, there is no duty up to $350,000 and less up to $450,000. You and your partner must never have owned a home in Australia. You must be 18 or over, and one buyer must be a citizen or permanent resident. You must move in within 12 months and live there for at least 12 months in a row.
